Helen Smith

Helen Smith is a Suffolk-based jeweller with over 30 years of experience, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Trained at Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, she specialises in Mokume Gane, an ancient Japanese metalworking technique. By fusing layers of contrasting metals into a solid block, then drilling, punching, and filing, she reveals intricate, organic patterns. Through repeated forging and refinement, these patterns become increasingly complex before being milled into sheet metal, ready to be transformed into elegant, timeless jewellery—often accented with 18ct gold and gemstones.
Helen’s passion for surface patterns extends to Cloisonné Enamel, where fine wires create compartments filled with vibrant, glass enamel. This meticulous process results in precise, detailed designs with a smooth, luminous finish.
Combining heritage techniques with a modern aesthetic, Helen crafts jewellery that is both striking and enduring. She also shares her expertise through hands-on workshops, guiding others in traditional jewellery-making skills, techniques, and materials.
