Welcoming new member, Alex Waylett.

Alex combines her illustrative background with sculptural machine embroidery capturing both colourful still life imagery and coastal themes. Her textural and often embellished art work , presented under glass, focuses on the diverse range of marine life found in and on East Anglian shores. Three dimensional stitched oyster, mussels and urchin shells take centre stage often mounted alongside her delicate watercolour illustrations. Whilst often abstract representations she enjoys creating collections and groups of shells mimicking the old style vintage illustrations and etchings.

Alex enjoys using second hand materials and threads and often uses found objects alongside her embroidery, relishing the idea of giving a discarded yet beautiful object such as a vintage compact or an old brooch a second life.

Her current body of work, aptly named ‘Home’ features sea glass and antique medicinal bottles, amongst her sealife sculptures, drawing our attention to the effects of sea debris and how creatures adapt by using our discarded rubbish as floating habitats.

Alex’s sea sculptures are created with machine embroidery thread, hand painted silk organza and thicker yarns stitched from the bobbin, to provide texture and structure to the artwork. Her Still Life stitched scenes are produced with fabric appliqué , handprinted watercolour paper, silk and stitch.
