The society welcomes new member Jane Hunter.

I studied Textile Design at Central Saint Martins in London, graduating with a BA, and spent much of my early career working across merchandising, fashion, textiles, and teaching in a range of educational settings.

These days, my version of bliss is carving lino in my garden studio, Radio 6 turned up loud.
My journey into printmaking began when I swapped inner-city London for the muddy shores of Mersea Island, just off the Essex coast. I took printmaking courses at Colchester Institute and Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop, where my love of drawing, painting, and print was reignited.

I’m inspired by the landscapes around me—walking, sketching, and photographing Mersea Island, the rivers Blackwater and Colne, and the Suffolk and Essex coastlines. Each print begins with observation: a drawing, a photo, a moment. Back in the studio, the image evolves through the printmaking process.

What draws me to printmaking is its endless possibilities. Each piece teaches me something new, sparking questions—what if I try this, or that? It’s a process of constant discovery.

Looking over my work, I’ve come to realise I’m telling stories of life by the sea. And yes, there’s definitely a bit of a boat obsession in there too.
