Jenny Portlock

The Suffolk Craft Society is delighted to welcome back accomplished printmaker Jenny Portlock. Jenny specialises in wood engraving and linocut, working primarily with boxwood – prized for its hardness and fine grain, which allow for exquisite detail in her work.

Having started with lino, Jenny gradually transitioned to wood, now her medium of choice. Her prints are created on a customised etching press, using traditional techniques to lock up her blocks in a chase.

Her work draws on a rich blend of imagination and eclectic subject matter, underpinned by a background in design that lends her prints a distinctive graphic quality. Influenced by the Japanese Ukiyo-e tradition and regularly in touch with artists in Japan, Jenny’s pieces often have a dreamlike, symbolic character, full of rhythm and intricate detail.

We look forward to seeing her work at our upcoming exhibition at the Guildhall in Bury St Edmunds.
