We’re delighted to welcome textile artist Alex Waylett as a new member of the Suffolk Craft Society.

Alex brings together her background in illustration with sculptural machine embroidery to create richly textured works inspired by still life and coastal themes. Her pieces, often presented under glass, explore the diverse marine life of East Anglia through colourful, tactile compositions. Three-dimensional stitched oysters, mussels, and urchin shells frequently take centre stage, displayed alongside delicate watercolour elements. Many works echo the charm of vintage natural history illustrations, with thoughtfully arranged collections of shells and forms.

A key part of Alex’s practice is her use of second-hand materials and found objects. She enjoys giving new life to overlooked items, such as vintage compacts and brooches, incorporating them into her embroidery to create something both beautiful and meaningful.

Alex’s sculptures are crafted using machine embroidery thread, hand-painted silk organza, and layered yarns to build structure and depth. Her still life scenes combine fabric appliqué, hand-printed watercolour paper, silk, and stitch.

We look forward to seeing Alex’s work in upcoming exhibitions.
