We are delighted to welcome Sara Barker back to the SCS following a short break from the Society.
Sara creates distinctive enamelled silver and copper jewellery inspired by her observations of urban landscapes and the ever-changing relationship between the built environment and the natural world. Her work celebrates the dynamic interplay of forms, colours and shapes found where these contrasting environments meet.
Reflecting on her inspiration, Sara explains: "East Anglia provides me with good light and open spaces, along with a sense of calm. However, it is the boundary between natural and man-made environments that offers new and dynamic shapes, which I explore through three-dimensional construction and a playful approach to colour."
She continues: "I aim for clarity and purity of line in my work, removing details that do not need to be there. Every piece is handmade, so although some designs are revisited, no two pieces are ever exactly the same."
Alongside her own creative practice, Sara is the Objects & Space Coordinator at Colchester School of Art. Since graduating in Jewellery Design in 1991, and later achieving a Distinction in MA Sculptural Practice in 2011, she has exhibited her work extensively both nationally and internationally.
