This weekend offers not one, but two wonderful opportunities to discover and support contemporary craft in East Anglia.
Firstly, it is the final weekend of the Suffolk Craft Society exhibition at CraftCo in Southwold – the perfect destination for a sunny day by the sea. This exciting exhibition is mentioned by the Crafts Council, making it a must-visit for anyone with an interest in contemporary craft.
Situated in one of Suffolk's most popular coastal towns, this special exhibition brings together the work of eleven Suffolk Craft Society members, showcasing an inspiring range of contemporary craft. Visitors can explore beautifully crafted work spanning ceramics, jewellery, textiles, leatherwork and printmaking, each piece reflecting the creativity, skill and individuality of its maker. Alongside the exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery, visitors can also discover work by Suffolk Craft Society members who regularly exhibit through CraftCo itself. Their work is displayed throughout the shop, offering even more opportunities to browse and purchase exceptional handmade pieces while enjoying all that Southwold has to offer.
At the same time, some Suffolk Craft Society members are opening the doors to their studios as part of Suffolk Open Studios. This annual event provides a rare and fascinating opportunity to step beyond the gallery space and into the places where creativity truly happens.
Visitors are warmly welcomed into artists' working environments, where they can gain insight into techniques, materials and processes, and discover the inspiration behind the work. Whether your interests lie in ceramics, textiles, printmaking, painting, jewellery, sculpture or mixed media, Suffolk Open Studios offers a unique chance to experience the creative process first-hand. From sketchbooks and prototypes to works in progress and finished pieces, visitors can see how ideas develop and evolve into the exceptional handmade work for which Suffolk's makers are renowned.
Each studio offers a different experience, reflecting the individuality of both maker and craft. Many artists will be demonstrating techniques, discussing their work and sharing stories from their creative journeys. For opening dates, times and further information about participating artists, please visit the Suffolk Open Studios website.
Whether you choose a day by the seaside at Southwold, a tour of Suffolk's inspiring studios, or perhaps both, this weekend presents a perfect opportunity to celebrate and support the outstanding talent of makers across the region.
