The Suffolk Craft Society extends its heartfelt thanks to Juliet Bowmaker as she steps down as Chair after four years of dedicated leadership and inspiring service.

Juliet's appointment as Chair in May 2022 coincided with her return to Suffolk, and the years that followed have been a period of significant change, growth and achievement for the Society. Reflecting on her time in the role, Juliet describes the journey as both fascinating and stimulating, shaped by new opportunities, evolving challenges and the collective efforts of Members, volunteers and partners.

During her tenure, the Society successfully navigated changes to its exhibition programme, securing new venues and establishing important long-term relationships. Our professional profile has been strengthened through refreshed marketing and advertising strategies, a modernised IT infrastructure, and a clearer presentation of who we are and what we do as a leading organisation supporting contemporary craft in Suffolk.

Juliet also helped foster valuable partnerships with the National Trust and Britten Pears Arts, while strengthening the Society's relationship with our Patron, Trevor Pickett. Among the many highlights of her term was the installation of the Curlew Bench, marking the Society's inauguration 56 years ago, and the launch of Crossing Crafts in collaboration with the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

The Society's growing reputation has also been reflected in invitations to participate in prestigious events including MADE London and London Craft Week. Throughout this period, Suffolk Craft Society has continued to attract and retain talented makers whose creativity and craftsmanship are at the heart of everything we do.

As Juliet notes, the work of ensuring the Society remains relevant, resilient and responsive to the needs of the making community continues. Looking ahead, she leaves the organisation in a strong position, with an exciting programme already in place for 2026 and new opportunities to explore beyond.

From the 1st June, Liz Chester will take on the role of Acting Chair until the 2026 AGM, or until a new Chair is appointed. Juliet has expressed her full confidence in Liz and in the future direction of the Society.

The Society is currently inviting applications for the role of Chair. Further information can be found here

We thank Juliet for her outstanding contribution over the past four years and wish her every success and happiness in her future endeavours.
