Suffolk Craft Society in partnership with BrittenPears Arts
30th March - 28th April 2026 in Gallery 21 & the DoveCote Studio, Snape Maltings, Suffolk IP17 1SP
Steeped in history, Snape Maltings began life in the 1840s as a centre for malting barley, with grain shipped by Thames barge to breweries in London and beyond. Over the decades, the site expanded to cover seven acres, becoming one of the largest flat-floor maltings in the country. After 120 years of industry, production ceased in 1965, marking the end of an era—but also the beginning of a remarkable transformation.
Composer Benjamin Britten, founder of the Aldeburgh Festival, saw the potential of the site. Seeking a larger venue for the internationally renowned festival, he worked with owner George Gooderham to convert the largest malthouse into what would become the Snape Maltings Concert Hall. Opened in 1967 by HM Queen Elizabeth, the hall is now celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and stands as an example of industrial building reimagined for the arts.
Today, Snape Maltings is a vibrant cultural destination, rich in heritage, creativity, and inspiration. As you explore its beautiful surroundings, we warmly encourage you to visit the Suffolk Craft Society exhibition in Gallery 21 and The Dovecote, where contemporary craftsmanship meets this extraordinary historic setting.
