Suffolk Craft Society welcomes new member Nicholas Rowe, a woodturner who draws inspiration from the bark and grain, and in the imperfections he finds in the green/wet, seasoned and reclaimed wood that he uses, all of which is locally sourced.

Although Nicholas may start by trying to define a form that best suits the natural material’s visual and tactile qualities, he is often induced to change and adapt his ideas in order to respect hidden voids, cracks. Marking the name of the wood and its growing place underneath each piece adds to the narrative of the work. Welcoming commissions, Nicholas appreciates that turning a client’s treasured wood brings additional responsibilities, since the work needs to carry an additional resonance.
