The Suffolk Craft Society welcomes new Maker Claire Pirie Ceramics.
Claire is a Suffolk-based potter, originally from Ayrshire, who has been living and working in Suffolk for over 40 years. Her passion for clay began during her Art Foundation Course, leading her to pursue a BA (Hons) in 3D Design – Ceramics at Bath in the early 1990s. Throughout her studies, she explored various techniques, but by her final year, she had discovered her true calling—creating beautifully thrown functional ware.
Claire’s work is centered around form, function, and the tactile allure of polished clay. Her calm, understated pieces are designed to complement their purpose—enhancing the flowers they cradle, the food they present, or the candlelight they reflect. She works primarily with porcelain, drawn to its purity and elegance. Once partially dried, each piece is carefully trimmed to refine its form. Her glazing choices are intentionally minimal, using only clear or white in glossy or satin matte finishes. Often, exteriors are left unglazed, allowing the natural color and texture of the clay to take center stage.
