As the Society prepares for its summer exhibition at the Ickworth Estate, attention turns to the glass artists whose work will be on display.
Verena Daniels uses fusing and slumping techniques to craft expressive pieces inspired by landscapes and natural forms. Working from her own sketches, she layers copper foil, wire, and coloured frit to capture shifting moods and light. Her finished pieces, slumped over ceramic moulds, evoke a deep connection to nature and a sense of movement frozen in glass.
Clare Gaylard sculpts intricate vessels, sculptures, and wearable art using Murano glass rods and the intense heat of the flame. Every element of her work is formed in the flame, with detailing and inclusions made by hand. Inspired by people, stories, and objects, Clare's work is richly coloured and patterned, celebrating both personal narrative and the intimate beauty of small forms. A graduate of Loughborough College of Art and Design, she brings a jeweller’s precision to every piece.
Hassina Khan creates kiln-formed glass objects that explore themes of cultural identity and belonging. Her current work features fragments of transliterated text—English words written in Urdu script—embedded in the glass to reflect the layered experiences of her bi-racial English-Pakistani heritage. A graduate of the University of Sunderland, her MA work was acquired for the permanent collection of the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. Her pieces invite reflection on hybridity and the complexities of in-between spaces.
Arabella Marshall brings a soulful, architectural quality to her glasswork, creating windows, panels, screens, and sculptures that enrich both private and public spaces. Her large-scale commissions are complemented by smaller tabletop panels, bowls, and even wearable glass jewellery. Each piece reflects her commitment to creating glasswork that speaks to emotion, light, and place—transforming everyday environments with subtle luminosity.
Coinciding with the start of Heritage Week, this exhibition celebrates both tradition and innovation—showcasing contemporary makers who continue to push the boundaries of their craft while honouring time-honoured techniques.
