Helen Maxfield, Annable Ridley, Sally Freer, Terry Bryan

Our talented printmakers are set to delight visitors at this year’s Suffolk Craft Society Winter Exhibition at the Guildhall in Bury St Edmunds. Their work celebrates the beauty of line, texture, and colour — capturing both the spirit of East Anglia and the individuality of each artist’s hand.

Terry Bryan, a printmaker and graphic artist from rural Essex, creates etchings, monotypes, and collagraphs inspired by landscapes, architecture, and military history. His precisely composed works balance design discipline with expressive storytelling. Marta Dyer-Smith experiments with collagraphy, drypoint, and relief printing to produce abstracted landscapes from outdoor sketches, while also sharing her innovative techniques through an active online printmaking community.

Sally Freer’s monoprints capture the quiet moods of Suffolk and Essex, layering colour and pattern to evoke hedgerows, fields, and tidal boats. Greta Hansen, trained at Ipswich Art School and Central Saint Martins, creates richly coloured collagraphs and reduction linocuts that celebrate the Suffolk landscape through her observational sketches. On Mersea Island, Jane Hunter translates her drawings and photographs of the coast into expressive lino prints that tell stories of life by the sea — often featuring her beloved boats.

Helen Maxfield draws on Suffolk’s countryside and coastline to produce limited-edition linocuts with strong composition and subtle texture, while Jenny Portlock, working in boxwood, creates exquisitely detailed wood engravings and linocuts inspired by imagination, rhythm, and Japanese Ukiyo-e ideals.

Together, these artists bring the vitality and versatility of printmaking to the fore — a celebration of craft, creativity, and the landscapes that inspire them.
