As preparations continue for our upcoming exhibition at Craft Co in Southwold, we are delighted to introduce the four ceramic artists who will be showcasing their work. Each brings a distinctive approach to the medium, from hand-built porcelain and wheel-thrown stoneware to coloured porcelain tableware and expressive sculptural forms.
Susie Bruce
Susie Bruce creates elegant hand-built porcelain vessels that celebrate both texture and form. Fascinated by the way clay behaves during the making process, she often works with slabs at the point where they begin to bend and collapse, allowing the material itself to influence the final shape.

Texture plays an important role in Susie’s work. Everyday materials such as lace, netting, fruit bags and other found objects are pressed into the clay to create intricate surface patterns. These are enhanced with washes and glazes that emphasise the depth and character of the forms. Susan is also the author of The Art of Hand Built Ceramics and a professional member of the Craft Potters Association.
Marie Coomber
Marie Coomber produces wheel-thrown ceramics in speckled stoneware. Her work celebrates the tactile qualities of clay, often leaving areas of the raw material exposed to contrast with smooth glazes, the resulting pieces invite handling and use.

Marie draws inspiration from the landscapes that surround her, from the Stour Valley and East Anglian coastline to her second home in south-west France and her native Germany. These influences are reflected in her distinctive colour palette and strong forms. Believing that functional ceramics should elevate everyday rituals, she creates unique pieces designed to bring pleasure and individuality to daily life.
Shelia Madder
Sheila Madder is inspired by the principles of the Slow Movement and Emotionally Durable Design. Each piece begins with a carefully designed form from which a plaster mould is created. Layers of self-coloured porcelain are built up within the mould before being carved, burnished, fired and meticulously finished to create beautifully smooth, tactile surfaces.

Central to the work is the idea of encouraging meaningful connections between people and the objects they use every day. Fingerprint-like carvings are incorporated into the surface, creating both visual interest and a physical reminder of the maker’s hand.
Mary Wyatt
Mary Wyatt’s ceramic sculptures explore shape, movement and balance through expressive hand-built forms. Her work captures human figures, animals and seascapes in moments of motion, creating pieces that feel both dynamic and contemplative.

Currently experimenting with raku firing techniques, Mary continues to push the boundaries of her practice while embracing the unpredictable qualities of the process. The dramatic surfaces and unique finishes produced by raku complement her sculptural approach, resulting in distinctive works that celebrate both craftsmanship and creative exploration.
We look forward to welcoming visitors to Craft Co in Southwold to discover the work of these four talented ceramic artists and explore the diversity of contemporary ceramics being created by Suffolk Craft Society members more information here >>
