Crafted in Tradition: An Interview with our Patron, Trevor Pickett
We catch up with our patron, Trevor Pickett, to explore his connections with the society, the county, and the world of crafts.
Pickett London’s story is deeply rooted in a heritage of craftsmanship that stretches back generations. Founder Trevor Pickett's journey began far from the bustle of London—in Southend, where both sides of his family made bespoke bicycles. "Everything was made to order," he reflects. "From those humble beginnings, I gained a real appreciation for the art of making something by hand. Even a bicycle, when crafted well, is a form of artistry—something that’s finally getting the wider recognition it deserves."
Trevor moved to London at just 16, arriving in 1979. Within a year, he was immersed in the world of retail—not on the high street, but in the prestigious Burlington Arcade. "By June 1980, I was selling leather goods. Back then, ‘luxury’ wasn’t a marketing term—it was about the materials, the craft, and the honesty of the process. No smoke and mirrors. Just real skill and quality."
This ethos continues to define Pickett London today. With team members who’ve been part of the business for over 40 years, including a Cordwainers-trained artisan, Pickett remains a rare brand grounded in practical knowledge of both craftsmanship and customer service. “We are in a position to offer the finest craftsmanship in this country with experience and understanding of the abilities and skills that we have to offer our customers even when we are negative of a request - we are being positive as we understand what is available to be made or not - it’s about the commitment and passion for craft"
What sets Pickett apart is this intimate, lived experience. "Not many accessory brands can say their staff come from a leatherworking background and have both worked in the workshop and sold over the counter. That makes a real difference. The Pickett product lasts and comes back for repair so I often see items I was selling in the 80s that are still able to be restored"
The Key to Longevity
Pickett London traces its roots back to a company called Unicorn, founded in 1952. Trevor joined in 1980, learning from seasoned experts at a time when local workshops were still active across Soho and Birmingham. "That knowledge—both mine and my team’s—gives customers confidence. We’ve been doing this since the '80s, and our products stand the test of time."
As the world has changed, so too has Pickett. While certain offerings from earlier years may now seem obsolete, the brand has evolved to meet modern needs without losing its core values. “We’ve adapted, but we’ve never compromised on integrity or the essence of who we are.”
A Heart in Suffolk
Though based in London, Trevor’s roots lie firmly in Suffolk. “It’s in my heart—I was born there, partly raised in Sizewell, and lived in Tunstall and Middleton Moor. I’m even planning my return to Sizewell. London may be where business happens, but Suffolk is home.”
His connection to the Suffolk Craft Society grew naturally from his appreciation of authentic craftsmanship. “I’ve always championed British and global craft. When Carla Carlisle, the former chair, introduced me to the Society, I was immediately drawn in. We shared a vision—to celebrate skill and artistry that goes beyond just making for the market.”
Trevor’s role as Patron of the Suffolk Craft Society has only deepened his respect for the region’s creative community. “Suffolk is a discovery—those lucky enough to find it, as Turner and Constable once did, understand its unique spirit. The breadth of talent here deserves a wider audience.”
Suffolk in the City: A Vision Realised
The Suffolk Craft Society made its London Craft Week debut in 2025 with Suffolk in the City, an initiative led by Juliet, current Chair of the Society, whose ambitious vision immediately resonated with Trevor. “She has a huge vision, much like my own. This collaboration gives us the opportunity to bring Suffolk’s creative excellence to London, especially during London Craft Week.” We’re delighted to be returning to London Craft Week this year and are very much looking forward to working with Trevor once again.
For Pickett London, participation in London Craft Week is about far more than a single event - it’s a platform. “It’s our opportunity to share what we do best: celebrating exceptional craftsmanship. We’re learning as we go, but we’re fully committed. We know we have something meaningful to offer, not just to London, but to the world.”
Looking Ahead
For Trevor and the Suffolk Craft Society, London Craft Week marks just the beginning. “This is about showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship Suffolk has to offer. It’s about legacy, tradition, and championing a future where making, rather than manufacturing, is once again celebrated.”
Suffolk in the City will be hosted at Pickett London in Mayfair with a satellite exhibition at Pickett London, Chelsea from 11th to 17th May 2026.
